Mark S's Visit January 2004

Our first visitor from the northeast was Mark Schenkman of Branchburg, NJ.  Being the first visitor, we decided to do many of the touristy things with Mark that we haven't had time to do since we moved to HI in May.  We had a blast!  We went to Mauna Kea twice, once for sunset & star gazing and again for sunrise!  We went to volcano (of course, 2 days before the big flow started up) and stayed overnight in Steph & Noel's comfy condo in Waikaloa.
Mark and Paul took a hike up the side of a cindercone between Mauna Loa ("Long Mountain") and Mauna Kea (" White Mountain").
Mark taking photos on Mana Road, the back road that goes around Mauna Kea.
Mark was a great guest, indulging me in my miscellaneous requests.  He put together my new office chair and the nightstand in our guest room - so future guests, be sure to thank him!   One morning, I asked him to shoot some snapshots of our newest family member, Dreydl.  Here she is, posing for Mark.  The day after Mark left, Dreydl disappeared.  We found her a couple of days later at the house that we lived in when we found her.  I think she was looking for Mark.  We got her back and now she's our guard kitty - watching the house for us!
Mark returning from a photo shoot on the beach of Waipio valley.  Note the rocky terrain, which is covering the normally soft, velvety black sand of Waipio Beach.  The rocks got washed up along most of the coast during storms in November & December.
