Little voices in a big world

W
e left it to the sweet-throats
they had the warmest notes
they did not sound as bells do
all that assaulting clanging

the mornings wouldn't be
the same with out the turning
of our heads towards the darting
outside our windows

i used to let the day in
i haven't tried for years

she asks if birds are special
'very much, my lil sparrow'.
she asks why they are
i tell her i think it's because

they can fly

little voices in a big world
and hers is mine all over again
i hear it effortless and velvet
a morning song in the deep of night
