| One of the first projects in the Crafts and Design furniture program. This project has you starting with an appoxiamately 2 by 4 by 12 inch block of basswood. Through a subtractive process you are to fashion A Spoon for... someone.
You preplan who the spoon would be for and what that spoon will look like. Using only a band-saw, gouges, chisels, knives, and spokeshaves you will free the spoon from your block of wood. In other years, the students were allowed to use sandpaper but my instructor, Stefan Smeja, wanted to see how much people rely on sandpaper to remove traces of poor hand-tool techniques. Even after receving a mark for the spoon I still preferred the texture obtained straight from the tools so much that I haven't bothered to smooth it with abrasives.
