Activity #1-- Language Arts/Social Studies

Read Aunt Harriet’s Underground Railroad in the Sky. As a group find the answers to the following questions. (These questions will be passed out on a worksheet for the group.)

3. Why was it a good reason for slaves to try to escape in the winter?

Book Task
Explain to the students that it is their responsibility to present this book to the class.  They will be doing the teaching and the testing of the material.  As a group they must decide on a method of presentation that will effectively get the information across to their classmates and demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter.
Give the group a copy of the Rubrics.

Teacher will meet with this group daily to discuss progress.

2. Working with a partner make a list of important facts about Harriet’s  life.

3. Write a biographical essay on Harriet Tubman based on the notes.  Be sure to go through all five steps of the writing process; prewriting activity, first draft, revise, edit and final copy.

Activity #3-- Map Skills

Pretend you are a fugitive slave and you are taking the journey to freedom.
1. Go to Underground Railroad (National Geographic, Interactive Journey) http://www.nationalgeographic.com/features/99/railroad/j1.html
2. Take the Journey. Write down the stations that you stop at.
Students will need a map of the United States for the next two activities.
3. Mark down on the map the stops you made on your journey.
4. Using the map at the back of the book, color in the slave states.

Activity # 4-- Art
Create a quilt square for Aunt Harriet’s Underground Railroad in the Sky. Choose a vocabulary word or key idea from the story for your quilt piece.
