Self Selected Reading
This is a very important part of our day. Students will have the opportunity
to choose from a variety of materials. The students will be expected
to read silently for 30 minutes and then be ready share what they have read
with the class. Students are able to read at other times during the
day, but this is a quiet, focused time.
Students will participate in Self Selected Reading nightly for 30 minutes
as part of their nightly homework.

|
Guided Reading
We will use whole group, buddy reading, triads, Literature Circles and various
other groupings to teach and reinforce reading strategies. Our text
will come from text books and literature books, as well as real world sources
such as newspapers, primary source history documents, letters and the Internet.

Writing
We will be doing a lot of writing this year. Most of our grammar will
be taught through the writing process. Correct grammar and writing
strategies will be taught through mini-lessons and one on one conferencing
with the teacher. Students will be tested regularly on their grammar
usage.
Students will be creating pieces in all of the various
genres. They will take some of their stories from the brainstorming
stage all the way to publication. The students will meet regularly
with the teacher to assess their progress.

Social
Studies
The fifth grade
curriculum is United States History. There is so much to cover this
year. We will be integrating a lot of our Social Studies and Language
Arts curiculums to make the most of our time.
We will be doing a lot of Project Based Learning this
year. This will entail a great deal of research and group work.

Homework/Agendas
Students will be reading nightly for 30 minutes. This is an important part of our curriculum. During class, we will be sharing our nightly reading in a variety of ways.
Students will receive an Agenda that will be filled in daily. The Agenda will have daily assignments, homework and behavior information for parents to see. This is an important communication tool. It is my way of letting you know what is going on in our classroom on a daily basis. Please sign this Agenda daily and return to school. Students will loose privileges if their Agenda is not signed and returned.
