RECOMMENDATIONS TO ALLEVIATE
SEWAGE POLLUTION

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) aims to inform the public of the state of
Britain's bathing waters, and influence water companies and the Government to take action to reduce coastal pollution.

MCS recommends the following actions to be taken to address the problems of sewage pollution around the
UK's coastline-

  • Secondary treatment of sewage as a minimum for all coastal discharges throughout the UK.
  • Immediate revision of the EC Bathing Water Directive to raise the minimum bacteriological standards to a level which adequately protects human health.
  • Public notices on beaches failing the Mandatory Standard, at times when sewage treatment is inoperative or intermittent discharges are in operation.
  • Identification and monitoring of all sites commonly used for recreational water sports as well as bathing.
  • Improvements to all intermittent discharges that pollute receiving waters and strict all year round controls on discharges.
  • Review of intermittent discharge consenting guidelines.
  • Identification and treatment of all private outfalls.
  • Strict penalties for failure to comply with discharge consents and to implement improvements on time.
  • Year round treatment of sewage - no consent should be given to turn off treatments outside the bathing season.
  • Development of a strategy for diffuse sources of bacterial and nutrient pollution in coastal waters, particularly in areas sensitive to such pollutants - estuaries, shellfish waters and bathing waters, involving all stakeholders.
  • Nitrate and phosphate stripping and biological oxygen demand removal for all discharges affecting rivers, estuaries and sensitive marine areas.
  • Labelling of sanitary and toiletry products with the correct disposal information: Bag It and Bin It - Please don't flush it.
