What is Environmental Health Science?

Introduction

The four basic determinants of health are hereditary or biological factors, medical care, lifestyle, and environment. Considering the world's population as a whole, the environment affects people's health more strongly than any of the other determinants. The environment encompasses the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe. In the past because poor environmental management, many people died from environmental related diseases such as typhoid fever. Today the health of a lot of people is affected due to water pollutants, air pollutants or food contamination. Some estimates, based on morbidity and mortality statistics, indicate that the impact of the environment on health status is as high as 80 percent.

Environmental Health Science

Is the systematic study of our environment and our proper place in it. It is highly interdisciplinary. The study of environmental health science can be divided but not limited in four major areas:

AIR QUALITY

Air Pollution Control

Clean Air Act

Primary and Secondary Pollutants

Photochemical Oxidants

Particle Matter (PM10, PM2.5)

Global Warming

Ozone Depletion

Acid Rain

Water Quality

Water Pollution Control

Point Source, Non point source

Drinking Water Treatment

Wastewater Treatment

Septic Systems

Chlorination

Soil Protection

Solid waste Management

Hazardous waste Management

Soil Erosion

Land used Management

Food Sanitation

Food quality Management

HACCP

Personal Hygiene

Vector Control, Pest Control
