What is Environmental Health Science?

Environmental health science is the study of the biological, chemical or physical agents introduced into the environment or occurring naturally and their effects on human health and ecological systems. The field also includes the study of human activities, a vital component in our complex ecosystem. Environmental health scientists serve the general welfare by safeguarding and improving the quality of food, shelter, air, water and other natural resources.

The EHS Department supports communities, government, private sector organizations, and other scientists and universities as part of its official duties. Public service activities performed by the department complement its teaching and research contributions.

EHS faculty members help community organizations investigate and understand environmental concerns by interpreting data and developing strategies that require scientific expertise. Examples include the ...

Members of the EHS Department assist local, state, national, and international agencies by serving on advisory panels related to specific issues. For example, a faculty member is contributing to the design of the National Children's Study, a prospective epidemiological investigation of childhood exposures and disease conducted under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health. Another EHS professor was a member of a U.S. government inter-agency panel that assessed the risks of perchlorate in drinking water.
