In a hard to believe act, the municipal employees association has cheated its members, ‘D’ group workers to the tune of several lakhs and shared the amount among office bearers and officials.

The state vice president of the Municipal workers association Ram Chandra rushed to Kodagu yesterday and took up investigation. The local association president Ramachandra and secretary D ‘Souza’ agreed and stated that they have taken forty percent of the amount granted to the D group employees. They also revealed that the money was also shared with the planning officer attached to the Deputy Commissioners office and CMC Commissioner Raya.

About 92 temporary workers working at CMC Madikeri, Town panchayaths at Kushalnagar, Virajpet and Somwarpet were made permanent after the order of the Supreme Court. The government released arrears amounting to crores of rupees. The employees association took signature on blank cheque from the employees and withdrew forty percent. While some of the employees knew about the misdeed and kept quite, majority of others were illiterates. A family member of one of the employees at Madikeri noticed withdrawal of rupees nine thousand rupees from he fathers account a day before and questioned it with the officials.

President of the employees association, Ramachandra told scribes and the state employees’ association office bearers that he has committed a blunder and will have to face the consequences. Secretary D Souza also accepted his mistake. Taluk association president Hobli told that he has collected cheques from six workers and handed them over to the president. President Ramachandra has directly collected the cheques from 22 other employees.

The office beares of the association have plundered money even at Somwarpet, Kushalnagar and Virajpet also with the support of officials.

CMC Commissioner Raya rejected the allegation of misappropriation and said that he is prepared to conduct an enquiry. Employees are unnecessarily throwing allegations, he commented.

State Vice president of the Employees association, Ramachandra said that the president and secretaries of Madikeri and Somwarpet associations would be suspended in two days time and Lokayukta would be requested to conduct investigation.
