ELEPHANTS TO BE SHIFTED;

Forest department has announced that an operation to shift elephants will begin at Ponnampet, bordering town of Hassan soon.

Forest department has taken action to capture two rogue elephants from this region as people have been appealing to the department to rid them of elephant menace.

DFO Mallesh told press yesterday that the central government has approved their request to capture two elephants and it will be followed by two more elephants to be caught. He said that Kodagu and Hassan forest departments will hold joint operation to capture the rogue elephants. Six tamed elephants, including Mysore Dasara famed Arjuna and Harsha will also take part in the operation.

Mallesh told press that capturing two or four elephants will not serve the purpose as there are around thirty elephants wandering in and around villages in the border. He said that shifting them to Bandipur range will solve the problem. But the centre has to agree to this, he opined. He said that the backwaters of Hemavathi reservoir is pushing these elephants into villages.

NON BAILABLE WARRANT TO A.K.SUBBAIAH,

The principal Civil and JMFC court here has issued a non bailable warrant to former MLC A.K.Subbaiah in connection with a private case filed by a local newspaper here.

Advocate Veeresh representing the newspaper said that A.K.Subbaiah is facing charges of insulting the newspaper in a public place and instigating his supporters to burn the newspaper in public during 2002 December. He had delivered provocative speech in public against the newspaper.

Subbaiah failed to get a stay to the case from High Court and was avoiding court summons by giving different reasons. The judge Indira Chettiar has now issued NBW against him.
