CALL TO DEVELOP AWARENESS ABOUT BIO DIVERSITY;

Head of National Bio diversity Authority, Chennai, Proffessor S.Kannan said that awareness about preserving the bio diversity is the need of the hour for the growth of a nation.

Addressing the awareness training programme held at Ponnampet Forestry College yesterday, he said that bio diversity plays a vital role in preserving flora and fauna. A region will remain rich only if the bio diversity is maintained well. He called upon people and students to grow more forest and also to protect wild life .

Environment expert Dr.Shivashankar from Bangalore unfurled the baffling figures of natural calamities which are on the increase. He said that earth is undergoing vast change due to volcano eruptions and earth quakes. About 1900 KMs of land is vacated since fifty million years. Ice mountains in Himalaya are melting. Flood threat in Ganges is increasing. Temperature is on the increase. Sea levels are on the increase. There is danger of towns in coastal areas being submerged. He predicted that the flood threat will haunt about 150 million hectares in future whereas it is effecting about sixty million hectares.

He accused mankind as responsible for the Bhutan Sea which is 15000 feet high to turn salty.

Head of bio diversity board, Ramesh said that it is important to clean our minds before we clean the land to get convinced about the importance of preserving bio diversity. Green house is the heart of nation, he explained. Nature is assaulted in the name of development, he regretted

It is unfortunate that we have to buy water; he opined and said that the board will assist those who come forward to preserve bio diversity.

Agriculture University vice chancellor P.G.Chengappa presided over the programme and said that people are ignorant about the value of bio diversity.Director of Forestry college N.S.Prakash welcomed the gathering. Professor C.G.Kushalappa proposed vote of thanks.

CNC THREATENS TO BOYCOT ELECTIONS;

Codava National Council will boycott elections, if the national parties fail to fulfill the demand of CNC, cautioned, secretary general of Codava National Council, N.U.Nachappa.

Addressing a seminar held at Cauvery College Gonicoppal yesterday, he stated that the parties should promise to fulfill the demands or face election boycott.

He said that they are demanding autonomy to 45 ‘Naad”, villages, including Kodava language into eighth schedule, including Kodavas in the list of tribes.

He declared that CNC will hold a protest at Bangalore on this 18th, considered as minorities’ day. Stating that Goorkagiri region of jarkand would be included to sixth schedule, Nacahppa said that CNC will demand to include 45 Naads also to sixth schedule. Continues agitations would be held to press the demand in village level, he informed. The protest will begin on this 24th at Ponnappasante, he said.

Addressing the gathering, professor Balvinder Arora from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi said that Kodagu should be given constitutional rights. Goorka land will get such right, he informed. He suggested that N.U.Nachappa should be addressed as the president of the CNC and not as secretary general.
