BANKERS ASKED TO GIVE PUSH TO SWARNA JAYANTHI, SWAROZGAR SCHEMES;Madikeri August 22, 2007 A banker’s awareness meeting was held at Madikeri yesterday and NABARD manager Kulakarni said that bankers play a major role in the successful implementation of Swarnajyothi and Swarozgar schemes. Kulkarni disclosed that the banks have lent rupees 25 crores to about 3700 Self help and Stree shakthi groups in Kodagu. He expressed happiness and said that the repayment is touching hundred percent. Kulkarni explained that Karnataka is in third place in the nation in implementing projects for Self help and Stree shakthi groups and there are about twenty eight lakh groups in the nation. He said that about five thousand families belonging to BPL have received loans under Swarna jayanthi scheme and four thousand more would be distributed with loans. Zilla panchayath president Ashok inaugurated the one day programme.Deputy secretary Julfikar spoke on the occasion. MLA IN CHINA TRIP;MLA Basavaraju from Virajpet is joining the China study trip of legislatives. Addressing a function at Gonicoppal he said that it is not a jolly trip and they will study the development aspects in China and Singapore during the trip. He disclosed that the government is spending rupees 3.1 crores on the trip and each MLA is given rupees 1.64 lakh for the tour expenditure. MLAs are touring in four groups and Basavaraju is leading one group. LORRIES BLOCK HIGH WAY;Lorry carrying hay yesterday turned turtle on the Mangalore highway near Madikeri and blocked the road for more than seven hours. The huge pot holes and unattended edges of the road caused the accident. Another tanker coming from opposite direction got stuck by the side of the lorry as it tried to cross the road. Traffic was hit for hours till eleven in the morning from 3 a.m. Vehicles queved up for kilometers on either side. Later people and police removed the vehicles with the use of a army truck.
