SMALL GROWER SHOT TO DEATH;Madikeri August 20, 2007 A small grower was shot to death and thrown into a river at Shirangalli village near Madapur. Somwarpet police inspector Nayak told that a small planter Medura P.Somaiah, 42, living alone at Shirangalli was shot at by unknown persons and was thrown into a river there, two days ago. His body was found floating on the river yesterday evening by a Gram Panchayath member who informed police. A gun shot was located at the chest region. Deceased was married and his wife and children were living at Bangalore. He was not in good terms with his brother, according to police. Investigation is on. TUSKER GOES BERSERK, KILLS ONE, ATTACKS MANY;One person was killed, a lady was seriously injured and few others were chased away by a tusker at Kodlipet in a matter of few hours, today. The first victim was attacked by the tusker at Janardana Halli near Kodlipet by eight in the morning. Puttamma, 65 was going to her estate for work and the tusker attacked her. She was thrown into air. A neighbor who came to her rescue, hearing the cry was chased to a distance and he also injured his knee. Puttamma is struggling for life at a hospital at Hassan with deep wounds. Around 9.30, in the same village, Ramaiah, 95 was killed on the spot by the same tusker. He was grasing the cows and the tusker standing near a solar fence charged at him. It pierced through its trunk at his chest and threw him away. Manjunath and Honnappa, who were witnessing the scene, were chased by the tusker and they escaped unhurt, entering into a building. TEACHERS LEG BROKEN;A herd of elephants attacked a teacher and his son traveling in a bike at Abburkatte near Kodlipet yesterday evening. They were swarmed by the elephants. One elephant pulled the bike in its trunk and threw it into a gorge and another attacked the teacher Channaveerappa. His son was also injured, but they escaped from death. People have been complaining that the joint operation conducted by the Kodagu Hassan forest department yielded no results and they winded up operation as they have to send elephants to Mysore Dasara.
