JUMBO ATTACKS GP SECREATRY;

A jumbo took a Gram Panchayath secretary by surprise and attacked him.

While he sustained grievous wounds, another person escaped from the scene.

B.E.Veeraraju, secretary to Nellihudikeri Gram panchayath was walking towards his house at Nanjarayapatna on the night of 6th. A tusker from nowhere charged at him, pierced its ivory into his stomach and threw him to a distance. His accomplice escaped to safety. Thinking that he must be dead, the tusker left the place.

Veeraraju was given first aid at Madikeri hospital and later shifted to Mysore. Veeraraju’s intestine was dangling out visibly after the attack and he was saved by Mysore doctors after an operation.

Gram Panchayath president Loknath has appealed to the forest department to protect them from elephant menace. The villagers have threatened to hold protest to condemn the lethargic feeling of forest officials. They said that they are incurring life and crop loss continuously due to elephant menace.

RAIN BRINGS DOWN HOUSES; HOLIDAY TO SCHOOLS CONTINUED

Houses have begun to come down and land slides are increasing as the incessant rainfall is crippling the normal life in the district.

Schools remained closed today for the third day as rivers and streams are flowing high in many places. Houses are collapsing in hilly regions at madikeri and Virajpet taluks and the total rain damage has crossed rupees forty two crores.

A house inside Madikeri town collapsed while another ar Indiranagar came down causing huge loss. Whereas no person was injured in the incident. Houses in villages are also coming down and the district administration is assessing the numbers and loss.

Palur temple is isolated as flood water has covered a large area. People are crossing the road with the help of a boat at Bhagamandala. About eight villages here are cut off from the main town. Bhagamandala received nine inches of rainfall yesterday and madikeri four inches. Talacauvery registered ten inches.

Laksmana teerta in South Kodagu is over flowing. Hundreds of acres of paddy and coffee areas are inudated. The farmers said that the plowing effort and seeds were all wasted due to the floods and they have incurred heavy loss.
