KODAGU; POLIO FREE

District surgeon Dr.Palekar told here that Kodagu is Polio free from fourteen years and Karnataka since five years.

Addressing a function to mark the breast feeding week here yesterday, he stated that Karnataka is in the forefront in eradicating polio.

Dr.Palekar said that the government is determined to reduce child death and is celebrating the first week of August as O.R.S day. He disclosed that the child death rate in the state is 43 for thousand and the government wants to reduce it to 30. And the pregnancy related death rate is 228 for one lakh, which is very high and the government wants to reduce it to hundred. Death rate in Karnataka is very high, compared to Kerala and Tamilnadu, he said.

He also disclosed that a new scheme by name “Madilu” would be implemented all over the state from this August 15 to pregnant ladies. Women who opt delivery in government hospital would be given a special kit worth rupees 825. The kit will include 19 sanitary items and cloths, rubber sheets to mother and child.

Deputy Commissioner Niranjan inaugurated the function and said that a healthy society not depending upon doctors and police should exist. It is a sign of healthy society. He said that both state and central governments are spending lots of money on health care.

Editor of Shakthi daily, G.Rajendra spoke on the occasion and said that breast milk is like nectar to a child and mothers should realize its importance.

OLD LADY DIES OF SUFFOCATION;

Chondavva, an eighty year old lady died at her house yesterday night suffocated from smoke.

Leaving alone in a house at Kavadi village, she was sleeping with a sand bag tied to her leg for some pain. According to police source, a kerosene lamp fell on the ground and a bed caught fire. Though the fire did not reach her bed, she died of suffocation due to the smoke created by fire.

Chondavva was the mother of under world don Kunjanda Ravi done to death by miscreants a year ago.

POLICE, FORST ALERT ABOUT NAXALITES;

Police and forest officials are on the alert about the possibilities of Naxalites infiltrating into Nagarahole national Park.

Addressing a press conference, Wildlife DFO A.K.Singh told at Nagarahole that possibilities of Naxalites attempting to convert jungles of Kodagu into their haven, and they have information about it. Forest and police will conduct joint operation at such time, he asserted.

Meeting the tribes who were holding continues protests against the atrocity by forest officials, Singh said that the department will not cross the line of law and harass them. He cautioned tribes about organizations trying to brain wash them. He also said that cases on forest offences will continue until the department receives orders about the amended law.

PROTEST AT SOMWARPET;

Consumers of Spice mobile service took out a procession and burnt the placards of Spice.

Protestors alleged that the Spice service is highly volatile and the consumers are charged for non service. They have given an ultimatum to the company to rectify the faults immediately or else face picketing of their unit at Somwarpet on this sixth.

The protest was led by B.R.Mahesh and B.G.Indresh of foot ball association. Consumers all over Kodagu are experiencing hassels in Spice service, cross talks, network problem, delayed message delivery, hanging are some of the regular hitch.
