Madikeri September 27, 2006

A national seminar on learner centered teaching, new paradigms, dynamics and dimensions was held in Field Marshal K.M.Cariappa College here today.

Inaugurating the seminar, Air marshal (Rtd.) K.M.Cariappa called upon the students to develop commitment towards the Nation along with the set values of life. He opined that the teachers should mould them into complete citizens for the country to prosper. Children should be introduced to great art works and artists, poets and poems and statesmen to mould into complete individuals.

Vice chancellor from mangalore University, Dr.Sudha Rao K delivered a key note and said that private sectors are posing challenge to University education. She gave examples and said that a diploma holder today earns ten times more than what a Phd holder. The pattern of interview and style of functioning in the private sectors today do not demand degree and certificate. They require skill and dedication, she said.

She noted that the society, government and teachers are focusing their attention only upon developing infrastructures for learning and are not concentrating on the Learner. It is important to give students knowledge along with education, she said. There is an immediate need to provide supportive environment for the students and teachers should be made accountable. Stating that education has become important for everything in life, learners should be encouraged to develop confidence to walk in the changing society, she said. There is a need to guide parents and teachers to convince the children to take learning as an enjoyment and not as a labor pain, she observed. Teachers should become facilitators and if they determine, a student could be molded into a successful citizen, the VC opined.

Teachers should change their style of teaching and the function of content should be focused on achieving knowledge and self confidence, Dr.Sudha rao said. Responsibility of learning lies in a teacher, she stressed.

Professor Nanjunda addressed the gathering and said that the students should not be treated as empty vessels. Education is not filling of petrol. Teachers should kindle faith in children, he said. Principal Pushpa Kuttanna presided over the function and explained that imparting knowledge to students and spreading it to the society are the two main objectives of the college.

Professors Narahari and S.Ramesh and Surendra Rao presented papers in the seminar.
