Madikeri October 11, 2006

The Zilla Panchayath in its meeting yesterday passed a resolution not to support the proposed ‘greater Cauvery project’ proposed by the government on the advice of the environmentalists. The above project aimed at clubbing together three existing protected forests in Kodagu will turn many villages immobile and cripple freedom to people and also reduce the land for agriculture and other activities. The meeting chaired by the president Ashok passed a resolution opposing the project. MLC Arun machaiah stated that the above project is aimed at attaining selfish benefits by the fake environmentalists who are hatching a design to damage western ghat.

Meanwhile the meeting heard complaints from the members that the Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav is interfering in the day to day affairs if the Zilla Panchayath and is ignoring the elected representatives. It was decided to urge the government to transfer the deputy commissioner from Kodagu. President ashok informed that the matter would be taken up in the high level meeting called at Bangalore in the presence of the ministers. The above meeting is called to discuss the problems facing Kodagu

MLC Arun Machaiah addressed the meeting and lambasted the politicians and officials. He accused them of harassing the tribes in the name of shifting and implementing projects. He alleged that the fake environmentalists are turning the life of Tribes miserable. He said that the NGOs are bribing the tribes with the fund flowing from western countries with the connivance of forest officials. Tribes are now confused whether they should stay inside the forest or outside. Some of the ZP members urged that the Tribes stay inside the forest.
