MERCHANTS WORRY FOR FUTURE

Madikeri oct 7.

While the Somwarpet general public appreciate the Town Panchayath act of demolishing 20 old shop building near Busstand, the affected merchant class fear about their future.

Usha Tejaswi, who became president of Somwapet Town Panchayath recently took a bold decision to demolish the old shops to expand the present congested Busstand at Somwarpet. She could manage the protests, legal hurdles and with the police help she had faced all..

The Town Panchayath has planned to construct 40 new shop buildings near private Busstand and KSRTC stands at the estimated cost of Rs. 82 lakhs. However the completion needs several months. Meanwhile the merchants who were carrying business in the old shops are spending leisure time in grief at their homes. They have no business to do. Although assurance is given to allot them the new shops, the Panchayath has got only Rs. 35 lakh amount to start the complex construction. The Govt. has assured assistance of Rs. 37 lakh. But it may be delayed according to a source. The merchants are further worried about the Town Panchayath elections nearing soon. Within three months the elections will be conducted and the merchants future entirely depends on the decisions by the new administrations.. If the decision depends on the selectivity upon the financial status, casteism and favoritism, then again the merchants may permanently suffer.
