NEW SP FOR COMMUNITY POLICING;

The newly appointed superintendent of police Dr.Subrmanyeshwara Rao has said that his priorities are to encourage community policing and discouraging illegal cow transport in the district.

Speaking to this correspondent, Rao said that cow transportation breeds illegal activities and he would see that it is controlled here. He was referring to the border crimes involving illegal transportation of cows, which may have links to one or two murders in the district.

Noting that criminal activities are comparatively low in the district, he said that police would find extra time to do community policing to establish peace and confidence and he would lay more emphasis on it. He also stated that corruption entering the department would also be checked to provide good administration.

GP GETS PRESIDENTS AWARD;

K Nidugane Gram Panchayath at Madikeri taluk is selected for presidents award under Swachata Andolan programme.

The GP president Deen Bopanna told that the Panchayath has built 150 toilets in cluster of villages falling under it. Smokeless cooking places and drainages are also built in these villages, he informed. The programme was taken up at a cost of rupees twenty lakhs for each village. The government will release rupees twenty lakh each to a village if the GP deposits ten percent of the amount. K Nidugane GP has done so.

LOCUST MIGRATES TO PARTS OF KODAGU;

The green killer Locust has began to show up in other estates, creating panic among planters.

The FAO member Sheru Subbaiah told this correspondent that they are seen in Kadanga, Kedamullur and Boikeri in Virajpet taluk. He said that the state and center governments should immediately contain the meance which might result in huge loss and the samre problem will repeat each year, if it is not checked properly. Though they were found only in two estates around Betoli village, they are now creating panic by changing places.

However, contradictory to the above development, the Coffee Research station at Chettalli has ruled out the possibility of migrating habit of the Locust found here.

The deputy director Prakashan who inspected the area with team of experts has appealed to the planters to kill the pests physically and said that it is difficult to eradicate them through spraying pesticides.

He also said that Locusts which are in hopper stage should be destroyed before they grow.

The deputy director of Agriculture, Shakuntala at Virajpet has visited the place and sent the pest sample to state university of agriculture for further opinion.
