AN ART WORKSHOP PAR EXCELLENCE;Madikeri June 7 An art workshop conducted by Nagpur south zone cultural centre at Madikeri produced some of the best landscape paintings. The six-day watercolour painting of the landscape during monsoon by a group of artists could be viewed by very few due to lack of publicity. The co sponsorers, State Kannada and culture department failed to give publicity and dozens of excellent paintings produced by the artists went unnoticed. The deputy commissioner Subodh Yadav yesterday took a look at the paintings displayed at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Artists Satish, prasanna Kumar and Bharath from madikeri, Sanjeev, Nagraj and Sayeed from other parts of the state painted the landscapes around madikeri from July 31. The artists stated that the Nagpur Cultural centre, owned by Central government has sent two more teams to Mysore and Bangalore. The paintings from all the three places would be exhibited in Mysore. Led by convener Ravi Chengappa, the protestors along with villagers rounded up the forst office and accused them of encouraging smuggling. The protestors later took the press and villagers around Ankanahalli, Seegemarur, Bettadalli and few other places where rampant felling of trees was done. Dozens of stems stood witness to the cutting and looting by smugglers. They alleged that forest department is hand in glove with the looting and they allow smugglers cut and transport valuable trees. The protestors alleged that the forest and police rapport in the border area is suffering, and it encourages smuggling. TENSION AT KUSHALNAGAR; CHILD DIES IN ACCIDENT;Madikeri June 7, 2006 Tension prevailed at Kushalnagar today as a school van toppled killing a student on the spot and injuring around 24. More than half a dozen children between the age group of eight and sixteen are shifted to different hospitals in grievous condition. Incident occurred near Guddehosur, six kilometers from kushalnagar in the evening as the bus carrying 25 children toppled on the road. Accident occurred as three vans belonging to Jnanaganga school at Guddehosur were recklessly being driven in competition. One van toppled while it tried to over take another in speed. Nandan Shetty, 11, a seventh standard student died on the spot and 25 others were injured, creating a pathetic situation. Few students were injured seriously in the incident. Parents and public rushed to the spot and shifted the children to different hospitals at kushalnagar and Madikeri. Seriously injured children were taken to Mysore, mangalore and madikeri hospitals. Condition of the remaining children is said to be out of danger. However, many students have lost limbs and are suffering from fractures and deep cuts. Residents of kushalnagar rushed to the spot after the incident in large number and demanded the presence of the directors at the spot. Tension prevailed as mob began to turn violent. Attempts were made to set ablaze the the van. Additional police forces were shifted to the spot and the condition was brought under control. Again the mob went to police station and demanded the arrest of the directors. Police took a director, Ashok for enquiry. Protestors demanded immediate compensation to the injured and also to the dead childs parents. Deceased Nutan is the son of Mahadevappa, a resident of Hospet in Bellary, serving as a manager in Central Bank, Kodagarahalli near sunticoppa. Nutans two other sisters who were in the same van was also injured in the accident. Zilla Panchayath president Ashok, Taluk panchayath president Kishore Kumar and others visited the hospital. Superintendent of police Ramachandra Rao told that the driver would be arrested and suitable action would be taken.
