KODAGU TO GET VIDHARBA PACKAGE;Madikeri July 27, 2006 Kodagu is identified with other districts to get a package on par with vidharba in maharastra. Central government has announced this package applicable to six districts in Karnataka to lift the farmers up from their problems. The package to Viodharba was announced by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to this place as he noticed chain of suicides being committed by cash strapped farmers. As opposition parties brought to the notice of the centre that there are several other districts where farmers are facing similar problems, the package was extended to certain districts of Karnataka. Under this package, the loan amounts of farmers would be waived off on certain cases, interests would be waived off and term of loans would be extended depending upon the situation. The package includes schemes to provide irrigation facilities, construction of stop walls and de silting of existing lakes and others. TIGER MEANACE ON THE INCREASE;The district is facing increased tiger menace this season. An estate labourer was attacked by a tiger yesterday evening at Kutta in South Kodagu. Mani, 40, was attacked from behind while he was working in the estate around 4.30 pm. The tiger let him as other labourers rushed to the spot hearing him shout. He was shifted to hospital in a serious condition. The tiger has claimed two buffalos in the same area during day time on Tuesday. Dozens of live stock was killed by the tigers during last two months. A man of sixty was also killed by the man eater couple of months ago. The angry residents state that the estate laborers are reluctant to work in estates. Children could not be sent to schools. People cannot walk alone. The forest department has to initiate action. It can be recalled that a tiger was shot dead by some one in this area, two months ago. TEMPLE BROCKEN;Miscreants broke into a Ganapathy temple at Dechur here yesterday and made away with Hundi cash and silver ornaments. The temple committee president B.A.Ramaiah complained to police that cash and jewelry worth rupees eighty thousand is stolen. Police recovered an axe used for the crime and investigation is on. |
