TUSKER TACKLES PLANTER;Madikeri July 18, 2006 A tusker took a planter by surprise and threw him in the air at Banavara near Shanivarsanthe on Sunday. Coffee planter Mariappa was taking a morning stroll inside the estate when the incident took place. He was walking with an umbrella as it was raining. A tusker charged from behind, lifted him up and threw him in the air. Mariappa fell unconscious, ten feet away. The members of his family went in search and shifted him to hospital. He has received multiple injuries. The doctors said that he had undergone Hernia operation recently and the operated areas are opened due to the attack. The range forest officer Monnappa who visited the spot told this correspondent that the government is sent with a request to capture 22 elephants in Kodagu – Hassan border. POSTAL EMPLOYEE STEALS CHEQUE BOOK;Viarajpet police arrested an employee of Post office here along with another on charges of stealing a cheque book and trying to encash it. According to police, Postal employee Manukumar of Kuttandi village along with his neighbour N.Manukumar had encashed rupees two thousand from the account of one Hamidh, living in Mumbai, from Corporation bank some timeback. Again when they tried to encash rupees ten thousand yesterday, police caught them on receiving complaint. Hamidh had requested the bank to send him a fifty leave cheque book, some time back. Manu Kumar stole the book in the course of receiving the parcel for post and tore few leaves and handed it over to his friend Manukumar. They drew rupees two thousand in the beginning as a test by forging the signature, earlier. As it came through, they tried to draw rupees ten thousand again. Meanwhile,Shahul Hamidh made an enquiry with the bank manager about the cheque book. The bank manager Manohar went suspicious and interrogated Manukumar. On confession, a complaint was lodged with police. Virajpet police arrested the duo and sent them to judicial custody. |
