GOVERNMENT APATHY TOWARDS KODAGU AND DK

Madikeri July 17, 2006

The agriculture community in Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada has a silent cry that the state government is ignoring the interest of these two districts.

A statistic clearly shows that the two districts are allotted a peanut amount for the activities under a scheme to distribute ceeds in subsidized rate.

Kodagu was sanctioned only rupees thirteen lakhs for the ceed supply this year while districts like Havery, Mandya, Mysore, Bellary and Bijapur receive handsome amounts. Farmers in Kodagu suffer both the ways. They hardly get any help from the department to sow their crop. They hardly have any government support in case of crop loss due to flood or landslides. The agriculturists demand that the government should at least release twenty five percent of what it releases to other districts.

The official figures show that Kodagu received only rupees 13 lakh for ceed distribution, Dakshina Kannada rupees 4 lakh, Bangalore city rupees 11 lakh, Bangalore rural rupees 55 lakh, Upipi rupees 18 lakh, Uttara Kannada rupees 140 laKH, Kolar rupees 175 lakh, Chamrajnagar rupees 210 lakh, Hassan 220, Mandya 290 lakh. Shimoga 370 lakh, Tumkur 390 lakh, Bidar 360 lakh.

On the higher side, Bellary received rupees 400 lakh, Bijapur 460, Havery rupees 525 lakh, Mysore rupees 575 lakh, Davanagere rupees 550 lakhs, Raichur rupees 535 lakh, Gulbarga 700 lakh and Belgaum rupees 725 lakh.

The agriculture community in the district has appealed to the government to increase its assistance to Kodagu. The community has alleged that lack of proper representation from the elected representatives is the main reason why Kodagu is being ignored.
