VILLAGERS PICKET VILLAGE PANCHAYATH;Madikeri August 15 Villagers of Madenad near Madikeri staged a protest against Village Panchayath and picketed the office yesterday. Village Panchayath had to face the ire due to negligence and progress less works in the vicinity. Residents, mostly laborers who had gathered before the panchayath office lost their temper as the president and the secretary arrived at the office after eleven. The crowd had gathered to collect ration cards which had to be signed by the president. Question their delay in coming to the office took new turns and the crowd turned hot. The protestors locked the office doors and demanded Zilla Panchayath officials to arrive at the spot. The picketing went till afternoon and the lock was opened after the assurance by few members to look into the irregularities. The protestors alleged double standard of the secretary, inefficiency from the part of the president and disinterest from the part of members. They demanded the resignation of all the elected representatives and transfer of the secretary. THREE COMMIT SUICIDE;Madikeri Aug.15 Three persons committed suicide in the district in different places. According to eye witnesses, an unknown person jumped into Cauvery River at Nellihudikeri near Siddapur and killed himself yesterday afternoon. His body was swept away by flood water and is yet to be traced. According to police, the person had left behind a shirt on the banks of the river and it contained a visiting card having the address of a Sullya furniture mart. Police said that they cannot establish whether he jumped to death or tried to take bath. Investigation is on. Nanjunda, 28, a contract worker committed suicide by hanging at Siddapur on 13th night. Police stated that Nanjunda, working at Village panchayath hung himself at home after returning from the duty. Reason for his death is not known. In the third incident, an eighty five year old person, Guruswamy ended his life by consuming poison. Father of a former Village panchayath vice president, Guruswamy consumed poison at his house at Siddapur. Police have registered a case. 1629 GIRLS GET BICYCLESMadikeri Aug.15 Under the new scheme recently announced by the Govt. 483 school girls in Madikeri thaluk,567 in Virajpet thaluk and 519 in Somwarpwet thalui will get free Bicycles.=-announced by Mr. Ramachandregowda the kodagu inncharge Minister. He was addressing the gathering at Madikeri Fort premises after flag hoisting on the independence day celebrations. Rs. 2.50 crores is reserved for tourism development in Kodagu, Rs. One crore has been released as a first stage towards rain relief fund in the district.-he explained. Out of 7500 illegal land and building occupation cases 1400 poor persons files were cleared and the remaining decisions require 5 years time. 58,348 persons are benefited by the ration cards. And all will be given the computerized cards during December .Rs. 2 crores is released for the science centre in Kodagu. The proposals include the establishment of wind mills in Kodagu to solve the electricity shortage. The minister recalled the services great freedom fighters in Kodagu. Before the function started the minister had garlanded the Late General Thimmaiah and late Field Marshal cariappa’s stastuets. Deputy Commissioner Mr..Subodh Yadav and S.P. Dr.Ramachandra Rao also received the marchfast salute by students. Various cultural programmes by children attracted the viewers.
