“HIGH TENSION” CREATES TENSION

Madikeri Aug. 13 The High-tension wire line of 400 KV capacity is going to be installed through estates , paddy fields and reserve forest area in kodagu. The Power grid corporation f India Ltd; Kerala has taken up the project with the Govt’s permission. The people of South Kodagu are agitating to stop the project through Kodagu.

The main argument behind the agitation is the cutting of trees in reserve forest area and spoiling the environment. The implementation of the project disturbs the wild animals dwelling inside the forest. It doubles the elephant menace, tiger attacks on the residents which are the present unsolvable problems.

The installation of polls and construction of electric towers through paddy fields and estates occupy the cultivated area . The farmers will loose portions of their lands. The passing of high tension wires create magnetic vibrations and affects the health. The danger of falling of the high powered wires during rainy season and due to wind calls for safety and alarm in the surrounding places.

Each poll requires 12x12x12 feet space and overall safety place of 200 meters surrounding. The whole area will be considered a restricted area for safety measures.

Kodagu is not at all benefited by the scheme. The high-tension lines starts from Mysore and will be stretched to Kozhikode, Kerala State. The scheme is for the benefit of Kerala people to increase the voltage and capacity of the power grid in Kerala.

The south Kodagu people have already formed an agitation committee. They have stopped the work at kanoor village. The environmentalists, the residents, farmers and coffee growers jointly opposing the scheme. The line passes through paddy fields and plantation areas starting from Maldare village Narikal village in the border area. The line passes through Maldare.Hundli, Siddapur,Badagabanangala,Gonikoppal, Balele,Mayamudi , Nallur, Besagur,Bekkesodlur,Harihara,Badaga, and Narikal villages in Kodagu and stretches to Tolpetty chechpost and joins Kerala state.

When the Govt. announces transparent policy, why this secret projects without disclosing in the area where the land is required? Govt. and the companies implementing the projects should come out with facts and figures and should inform the public about pros and cons of the project results.. People now are ready to face the consequences to stop the high-tension project.
