CARDAMOM PLANTATION COLLAPSINGMadikeri Aug.7 Once the cardamom was the plantation queen in kodagu. Now it is in the destructive position. The cardamom has still demand. It is used for fashionable items manufacturing. It is used for the manufacture of medicine, it is useful in preparing scents, biscuits etc;The main reason for the collapse of cardamom plantation is the denudation of forest.. Shade is declining in the estates.. Considering the statistics since 10 years more than 4 thousand hectares of cardamom growing area is changed and opted for coffee growing. The present grown area has come down to 11 thousand hectares from the previous 15 thousand hectares. Another reason for the deterioration is the decline in prices. Once the rate was Rs.800 per K.G..The present rate is average Rs. 200. The competition from Gwatemala is another reason for attack on Indian good quality and perfumed cardamom. India is importing from Gwatemala. Thatt country produces 20 thousand Metric tonnes of cardamom whereas Indian production has now limited to 12 thousand metric tonnes At present kodagu has 5 thousand Cardamom growers. Small growers are not included in this list. Last year’s production in Kodagu has reached 739 M..tons. Thuis year it may go up further. The Indian Spices Board is helping and promoting cardamom. For the replantation the board is giving subsidy amount as well as Rs. 9 thousand per hectare. The board is also ready to provide 50 % subsidy for buying pumpsets, processing machines and also to improve the quality and even to provide irrigation facilities in Toto PHOTO :SCENE OF CARDAMOM PLANT.. |
