MONSOON AFFECTS IN KODAGU

This year monsoon in kodagu has a peculiar affect. Usually if the rain starts there would not have been break till August 15th. It was a surprise thing every year about the break during August 15th. Then again rain continues and spreads during September and October. Heavy rainfall will be recorded during Juyl, which is usually found.

This year the monsoon has its own way. Before the rain commences heavy wind with sound blows. Then the pouring of rain is heavy. The people who wander walking and going in two wheelers are suddenly warned and will fast move towards the nearby shelter. The rain pours minimum half an hour and giving break for more than a hour or so. This type of occurring and breaking has become a routine experience in Kodagu this year. But another surprise experience is the shivering cold this year during monsoon. During night time the people search for woolen sweaters and rugs. Even, the demand has increased for room heaters.The cold wind blows due to the gap in the rainfall. At the time of raining cold disappears and keeps the physique intact.

In Kodagu district 20,300 hectares of paddy field has been sown so for. This leads to 64% of the total covered.

About 286 acres of paddy field has been damaged due to heavy rain and the loss estimated is Rs. 6 lakhs. In Madikeri thaluk 6,100 hectares, In Somwarpt thaluk 6000 hectares and in Virajpet thalukl 10200 hectares of paddy fields is so for cultivated. Other crops cultivated are 480 hectares of panic seed 2600 hectares of jowor and 250 hectares of tobacco are being cultivated this year in Kodagu District t.

Since January, the Madikeri thaluk has got a rainfall record of 100 inches till today .Last year the rain was 109 inches. About 66 inches of rain recorded in Virajpet thaluk; Last year it was 81 inches. 63 inches rainfall recorded at Somwarpet thaluk; Last year it was 68 inches.In the district the average rainfall calculated is 76 inches till the day. In Bhagamndala the rain record shows 166 inches this year till today.

Harangi reservoir shows 2858 feet of water level, Last year during this period it was the same. The inflow of water is 3133 cusecs and the outflow released is 2018 cusecs of water from Harangi reservoir.
