FISHY DEAL IN FISHERIES DEPARTMENT;

The fisheries department in Kodagu has become more of a monument than of any usefulness to public.

Crores of rupees spent at Harangi fisheries centre turned futile, producing only misappropriation complaints since years.

Presently, residents of Somwarpet have complained that a fisheries department situated at Kalkandur, 4 kilometers from there has become useless with no activities. The staffs present in the deserted building only draw their salary and have no work. The people have to go either to Madikeri or Harangi to get seedlings since the breeding is not properly done here.

The story at Gonicoppa Fisheries centre is a bit different. People here complain of large scale misappropriation. Seedlings sold to people contain less number. The centre here has neglected the building and grass grows inside the seedling breeding tank.

People complain that the officials will make them wait to get seedlings to create tension. Once the crowd has gathered, they sell seedlings in polythene bags and advice that they will survive only for two hours and they have to be let into tanks.

They are sold at rupees 200 to 400 per thousand, depending upon the variety. Few people realized that the polythene bag of 1000 seedling contains only 300 to 400 only? Thinking that they wont count the seedlings, officials are taking villagers for a raid, they said. While a few questioned the misdeed recently, the concerned officer silenced them by telling ‘we will adjust in the next deal”!

Action to stop the misdeed and re start of the activities is demanded.
