TRAMPLED TO DEATH;Somanna ,65, of Avaregunda village was trampled to death by an elephant, yesterday. A tuskar attacked him at 2 a.m as he opened the doors of his house, on hearing disturbance, outside. Though his son could escape, old man was trampled and trounced. He died in the hospital. The incident took place at Avaregunda near Siddapur. In another incident, an elephant inside the forest at Madenur near Thithimathi attacked an estate labourer Kala, 48. The elephant threw Kala to a distance and disappeared. Seriously injured Kala is undergoing treatment at a hospital. DISTRICT AWARD;Mr.B.G.Anantha Shayana , joint editor of Shakthi daily is conferred the district award for humanitarian report and G.K.Balakrishna for investigative report. The awards instituted by the district journalists association during its general body on this 29th. BIZARRE FESTIVAL HELD;Kunde Habba, a festival covered with eccentric abuses and language was held at Devarapur near Thithimathi, yesterday. Tribes decorating themselves in strange costumes and colours abuse God and people, their masters and visitors in the filthiest possible language during the festival. Unique in its own sense, the background of the festival says that Lord Aiyappa once fell in love with Godess Bhadrakali and left his fellow mates, the tribes. Hence the tribes profusely abuse Lord Aiyappa and every one on this occasion. Speciality of it is that nobody takes offended by the abuse on this particular day. MLC OPPOSES MINING;Mlc Mr.Arun Machaiah has opposed the mining activities in the district and urged the government to stop this activity that will damage flora and fauna. Addressing scribes at Kushalnagar, he stated that quarrying is rampant in the district and district administration should use its good office to check the illegal activity. Meanwhile, chairperson of KUWSB, Mrs.K.P.Chandrakala also urged in a statement that quarrying should not be encouraged in the district. |
