CO OPERATIVE ACT TO BE AMEND;

Co-operative minister Mr.R.V.Deshapande said here that the rules would be amended to provide more strength to the co-operative field.

Inaugurating the centenary celebration of the co-operative movement here yesterday, the minister said that a special review committee is formed to prepare a report to improve the system. Former minister Mr.M.C.Nanaiah, Professor Vaidyanath Patil and Mr.Vishwanath are in the committee. Their report would be forwarded to central government.

Mr.Deshpande also said that the membership would be raised to ten lakh by 2007. The government will fund membership to the poor through self help groups and reach the target, he disclosed.

He also clarified that the interest waiver scheme of government on agriculture loans would be in effect till June end.

Addressing the gathering former minister Mr.M.c.Nanaiah adviced the politicians to keep away from co-operative sector. He alleged that their interference snubbed the development of the sector and since hundred years. Co-operative sector should function independently to see progress, he urged.

Senior co operative Mr.G.T.madegowda lambasted the governments policy of amending the rules every now and then. He stated that interference by the government would never allow co-operative sector to grow. He charged that the governments scheme to waive off the loan is not beneficial to prompt agriculturists, who never keep loan pending. He opined that country could never survive without the development of co-operative sector.

SUB INSPECTOR SUSPENDED;

Superintendent of police Mr.Devjyothi Ray has ordered suspension of a police sub inspector Mr.B.G.Shankarappa on derilction of duty.

Shankarappa was not in the spot when the SP visited a quarry center where a protest was going on at Tolur Shettalli near Somwarpet. Shankarappa was serving at Somwarpet and was in a drunken state, else where at the time of the incident, a source disclosed.

This is the second case of a sub inspector being suspended in a week’s time with the Kushalnagar Si Prakash Gowda being involved in a rose wood theft case.

52 SENA ACTIVISTS HELD;

Police holds fifty-two Cauvery sena activists, including its convener Mr.Ravi Chengappa, yesterday.

Police alleged that the activists trespassed into quarry centers at Somwarpet taluk and damaged equipments and materials. They also threatened the people present there.

MEMBERSHIP ON THE INCREASE; CHAMPA

Chairman of the Kannada Sahitya parishdh, Prof. Chandra Shekara patil told here that the membership of the Parishth has crossed seventy thousand and it’s the only literary organization in the country with such strength of members.

He was addressing the valedictory function of the Kuvempu centenary function here yesterday. Continuing, he cautioned the district administration to see that the nationalized banks write boards also in Kannada. Their ignorance might lead to protests, he warned.

Stating that it is inevitable to remove Kannada opponents, Mr.Champa said that its only in Karnataka that they have to fight to preserve their own mother tongue. Kannadigas have more powerful enemies within themselves than outsiders, he regretted.

MLA Mr.K.G.Bopaiah presided over the meet. Mr.K.P.Balasubrahmanya, Mr.Sridhar and others spoke on the occasion. DC Mr.Subrmanyam, Mr.K.T.Baby Mathew and others were present.
