KALUR UNDER WHIRLPOOL OF FEAR;The villagers of Kalur are reeling under fear. A herd of elephant is creating ruckus by bulldozing their crops and properties. Their life is at stake. But the forest department is turning a deaf ear to their pleas, they complain. An agriculturist Joyappa narrated the incident he faced the previous night. A tusker with a calf rampaged his crops at midnight. The tusker crushed a twenty five year old coconut tree earning him bread. The whole village is facing the wrath of elephant herd. Last month, a herd destroyed a house and injured couple of people. One person lost his ear, trying to slip through a fence. Villagers have demanded immediate action from the forest department to save them from this menace. They plead that Kalur is a remote village lacking basic facility. People live in poverty with very smallholdings. Attacks from elephants means cutting their livelihood. Door to our future is being closed, please save us, they plead. FOUNDATION LAID FOR MEMORIAL;Educationist Kurunji Venkataramana Gowda laid foundation stone for Guddemane Appaih memorial here today. A fourteen feet statue of the freedom fighter Appaiah, slain by British will be erected at the entrance of Madikeri. Mr.Kurunji Venkataramana Gowda handed over a cheque for rupees fifty thousand towards the memorial and promised to pay another fifty thousand. General B.C.Nanda (Rtd.) unveiled the plaque and said that freedom fighters from Biddanda family, to which he belongs to, had also fought together with Guddemane Appaiah against British. MLA Mr.K.G.Bopaiah presided over the meeting. Dr. M.M.Chengappa, Deputy Commissioner Mr.Subramanyam, Guddera Appaiah, Mr.D.S.Madappa and others were present as chief guests. Ramesh welcomed the gathering.Mr.G.Rajendra proposed vote of thanks. REJUVENATION OF PADI IGGUTAPPA TEMPLE;The temple committee of Padi Igguthappa has decided to take up rejuvenation work at a cost of rupees 45 lakhs. Presiding over the general body meeting at Padi, president Mr.K.Muthappa said that the first phase of the work requires around 23 lakhs and money has to be raised. The members suggested to form a trust to proceed with the project, including the Deputy Commissioner. |
