POWER GENERATION IS NECESSARY FOR A DEVELOPING COUNTRY;Former chief of National hydro Electric corporation and Un expert on environmental issues P.M.Belliappa told here that generation of power is a must for any developing countries. Addressing an interaction function organized by Codagu Women Coffee Awareness Body here yesterday, he stated that all energy sources in the country should be tapped to develop economy and generate employment opportunity. Chairman of Coorg Wildlife Society, Col Muthanna alleged that about fourteen hydel projects are coming up in Kodagu as a result of political understanding and huge exchange of money, which is causing concern. Belliappa in his reply said that Hydel projects could be taken up only on hilly regions and not on plain lands. To prepare an omlet, the egg has to be broken; he said and told that people should look at the developmental aspects of the country in general. He opined that he is not issuing a judgment about the proposed projects in Kodagu and advised that people should not look at it with emotional or blind view. He asked the audience to make use of the transparency act and get the details of the projects in full. He also said that people can also claim compensation for the submerged lands. Mentioning about the World scenario, he commented America as the main environmental polluter and said that it is not supporting the CUTO agreement about carbon trade. He explained how President Bush is embarrassed after Bill Clinton bashed him about the decision. Talking about the plastic usage, Belliappa said that use of plastic has become inevitable world over. Plastic management is the need of the day than avoiding it, he said. President of the CWCAB Mrs.Chandramathi welcomed the gathering. Secretary Mrs.Chitra Subbaiah proposed vote of thanks. HOSTEL WARDEN SUSPENDED; A hostel warden was suspended by the Chief Executive officer of Zilla Panchayath, Sundara naik for dereliction of duty. The suspension came as H.K.Doddaiah the warden of a boy’s hostel run by the social welfare department escaped by climbing the compound wall as the CEO paid a surprise visit, yesterday. Sundar naik found that the store room was empty though stock was shown on record. Even money was being drawn for 104 inmates, though only 74 inmates were living there. Order of suspension was issued on the spot as irregularities were proved at first sight. Social welfare assistant director and other officials accompanied the CEO. |
