MURDERER GETS LIFER;The district and sessions court here has sentenced to life a murderer. Sessions judge Venktesh pronounced the judgement yesterday and ordered a tribal Raju to undergo life imprisonment and pay a fine of rupees three thousand. According to police Raju had brutally killed one Thimma with a club on 7.1.2004 at Hoddur village near Madikeri. SIMPLE IMPRISONMENT;In another case lower court has sentenced a months simple imprisonment to a thief. Uthappa allegedly broke into shops at Napoklu during March and attempted to steal things. CMC REDUCES TAX;The City Municipal Council has decided to reduce the percentage of tax on houses and commercial buildings. Holding a special meeting on the request by the District Chamber of Commerce, the members decided to bring down the burden by few percents. It is now decided to reduce the house tax from 0.6 to 0.5 and commercial building tax from nine percent to seven. The CMC commissioner Jeevan Kumar and councilors have appealed to people to pay the revised tax amount immediately to avoid legal complications. The CoC general secretary G.Chidvilas has thanked the CMC to have responded to their request and appealed to the traders to pay the tax without delay. CONSUMERS FORUM ORDERS INSURANCE COMPANY TO PAY;The consumer forum has ordered United India Insurance Company and Oriental Insurance company to pay rupees 16,89,959 plus 12% interest to a super bazaar. Mehroz Khan, proprietor of Home Needs here had lodged a complaint with the Consumers forum alleging that the insurance company is not prepared to pay his claim. Home needs incurred a huge loss on 4.6.03 due to an electric short circuit. Mehroz Khan had claimed rupees ten lakh loss and appealed to the United insurance company to bear the loss. But the company had offered to pay only rupees two lakh. He had also claimed rupees eight lakh from oriental insurance company for the medical unit. Verifying the survey conducted by the Insurance companies themselves, the district Consumers Redressal Forum has passed the above order. DISTRICT HAS 274 HIV CASES;Kodagu has 274 HIV positive cases, according to health officials. The number which was only 194 till 2004 has risen to 274 till October end. The speakers addressing the Aids awareness day yesterday stated that there is an urgent need to bring health awareness as the dreaded disease is spreading mainly due to the uncontrolled life style. G.rajendra, editor of Shakthi daily presided over the function. Dr.Nanjaiah, Arathi Pramodh, DHO S.C.Jagannath spoke on the occasion. BEO Sridhar compeered the programme. A HIV positive boy inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp. Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav inaugurated the procession.
