STATE LEVEL MUDDY GAME AT KAGGODLU

The state level muddy game at Kaggodlu near here attracted hundreds of spectators. The 4th year celebrations held at C.D.Bopaiah’s, paddy fields. The women tug of war event gave a good entertainment and the viewers enthusiastically supported with vociferations .The women tug of war ran for more than thirty three minutes with equal strength from Friends team, Galibeedu and Mutharmudi teams. Ultimately Galibeedu team won with pulling the rope to their side. Manikanta of Madikeri won the hat Rick prize in the overall championship. He is the winner since three years.

V.N.Dejamma of Gonikoppal achieved overall championship in women section.

The Men’s tug of war ended after 9 minutes of fight between Nalnad Planters team, Napoklu and Friends team, Virajpet. Friends’ team obtained the first place. In Men’ Volleyball Goutham Friends team Murnad got first place and GYC team, Gundigere became the runner-up.

The Madikeri Thaluk Thahasildar Shakuntthala inaugurated the sports event. The rural sports like muddy games create original and natural sports activity and they are not artificial- opined Shakunthala in her speech.

Ex. M.L.A D.S.Madappa,was present. Hakathur Village panchayath president H..B. Savithri presided .

The valedictory function was attended by the M.L.A.K.G.Bopaiah and others.

GENERAL THIMMAIAH’S BIRTH CENTENARY

Late General Thimmaiah and Late Field Marshal Cariappa are the two eternal names in the history of Indian Army and they are always remembered in Kodagu district , their native places.

The coming march 31st is the Birth centenary day of General, Thimmaiah.. All the Kodava Samajas jointly celebrates the centenary in a grand manner- said Mathanda Monnappa, the president, Akhila kodava Samaj, Virajpet. The reception committee consists Lt. Gen B.C. Nanda (Retd.),and others.

The President Dr. Ablul Kalam, the defence minister Pranav Mukharji, the Karnataka Chief Minister Dharam Singh, the Army General J.J.Singh would be invited.

As a preliminary event. Sports and cultural competitions will be conducted during November. Nayada Vasu Nanjappa, the Virajpet Kodava Samaj president has been elected as the president for the sports conducting committee. Cheppudira Harry Devaiah is the president for Cultural orgonising committee. Many other literary competitions are arranged.

M.D.Muthappa took the responsibility of bringing out a souvenir. , The “Brahmagiri” Kodava weekly editor has been chosen as the convener for this committee. The Sky diving, band march and other disciplined shows are arranged during the celebrations..The total cost estimated is nearly Rs. 15 lakhs.

REJUVENATION F OF CARDAMOM MARKETING

Once it was cardamom, the main plantation crop and created way of dependency for livelihood in Kodagu. Now, Coffee and Pepper are slowly replacing cardamom lands. However, in many rural places, especially in Somwarpet thaluk Pushpagiri belt, the cultivation still holds .The Kodagu Cardamom growers association which has a historical background had b became inactive since few years due to low production , less rate and the mismanagements. The newly elected president Machettira Chotu Kaverappa and his fellow directors are now showing keen interest in the rejuvenation of this plantation crop by providing a good market facility in the district through auctioneering of the product.

The society will start purchasing the cardamom from 16-8-2005 from the growers. Even advance amount will b e paid to them who prefer their product to be sold through auctions. The growers who prefer immediate payment will b e paid the present market rate amount.

The cardamom society intends to collect deposits from the cardamom growers by providing them the highest rate of interest. The deposits can b e temporarily used for rotation of money in conducting the auctions said Kayapanda Tata changappa, D.E. Bopaiah and N.A.Veerappa, the society directors.

The society has got a bad debt of Rs. 20 lakh which was held up to b e collected from the members during 19 years back through various heads. The president Kaverappa urged the Govt. to wave off this amount in order to manage the society in a smooth going manner and to protect the interest of the small cardamom growers in the district. Even, the growers have suffered heavy loss.
