KUMBAKONAM TRAGEDY TO REPEAT IN KODAGU ?

Its no surprise if it repeats. The government schools implementing ‘Akshara Dasaha’ definetly face this danger as sub standard equipments are throwing sleepless nights before the school managements.

The scheme came into existence in the year 2003 was a boon to the middlemen and hot pocketed officials. Kodagu has about 337 schools falling under this scheme. The Deputy Commissioner ordered these schools to equip themselves with gas stoves and cylinders. The local dealers supplied the cylinders. But the regulators and stoves were supplied by some outsiders. An official exhibited extra interest to place this order to outsiders.

It has come to light now that the materials supplied by this dealer are of low grade.  There are instances of leaking regulators, tubes with cuts and damaged burners. The parents complain that they fear for the life of their children as food is cooked inside the class rooms in many schools with no extra rooms. They stink with gaseous smell.

An assistant director’s post was created to manage this programme by the government. His silence to many complaints by the schools and parents create suspicion about his understanding with the suppliers. The district administration is also turning a blind eye towards this sword hanging over the heads of pupil.

An immediate action could save the district from repeat of Kumbakonam.
