EXCISE SLEUTHS SEIZE SPIRIT WORTH 3.5 LAKH; Excise sleuths of Kodagu seized Spirit worth Rs.3.5 lakhs early today at Koppa gate. The Deputy Commissioner of Excise Mr.Mohamed Illyas Ahmed told that the Spirit without permit was being transported to Kerala. The lorry transporting the spirit was also seized and two persons arrested in this connection. The excise sleuths led by SI Mr.Balakrishna traced 100 cans of Spirit being loaded beneath eggs inside the lorry. One Srinivas arrested in the incident was found transporting spirit in the same way, two weeks ago. He was arrested with spirit worth six lakh being transported to Kerala in another lorry. Mr.Ahmed states that rampant attempts to smuggle spirit to Kerala are being made by smugglers operating secretly. He regretted that the Excise department has a huge shortage of staff from the ranks of inspectors to guards. Incidentally this is the third smuggling attempt thwarted by the department in one month. HARANGI GARDENS TO BE DEVELOPED; The water resources secretary Mr.H.S.Mahesh yesterday directed the officials to develop garden in the lands left deserted around the Reservoir.
