He also soaked up the blues and had a fond ear for jazz guitarists. He learned guitar and joined the Hi Neighbor Boys for whom he made his first recording for the American Record Label, Guitar Fantasy, in 1938. Zeb took his name from his own composition, the Zeb Turner Stomp and soon teamed up with his brother who was using the name Zeke Turner. In 1944 he came to Nashville with Wally Fowler's band and two years later charted with Zeb's Mountain Boogie for the local Bullet label. By the late 40's, the brothers were playing guitar on many sessions, turning up on records by Red Foley and Hank Williams (Mind Your Own Business). Zeb also wrote Eddy Arnold's 1947 hit, It's a Sin with Fred Rose. As well as picking for others, he also recorded in his own right on labels such as Nashville's Bullet Records and, later, Cincinnati's King Records. He had developed a neat boogie guitar style but only had two Top 20 hits, Tennessee Boogie (# 11) and Chew Tabacco Rag (# 8) in 1949 and 1951 respectively. Other highlights of his King output include Boogie Woogie Lou, Why Don't You Haul Off and Get Religion, I Got Loaded, Crazy Heart, and Jersey Rock. He ended his career as a folksinger in Montreal before succumbing to cancer. Recommended listening: Tennessee Boogie & Jersey Rock - Westside
