From: "Dik de Heer" Date: Tue Mar 5, 2002 1:17 am Subject: Born To Be With You : Whitey Pullen WHITEY PULLEN Born Dwight A. Pullen, 5 March 1931, Blountsville, Alabama Died 24 November 1961, California The California Death Index shows Pullen's year of birth as 1931, not 1935, as was generally assumed till now. He was band manager at the Red Barn in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1956 and was responsible for booking Gene Vincent into his club. After this he and his wife followed Gene back to Los Angeles where he took on the responsibilities of road manager for Gene. He also wrote "She She Little Sheila" (with Jerry Merritt) and "Every- body's Got a Date" for Gene Vincent ; these were released on Gene's LP "Crazy Times" (Capitol T 1342) in 1959. Before that, Pullen had recorded one great R&R single for the Carlton label in 1958, "Sunglasses After Dark"/"Teenage Bug" (credited to Dwight Pullen), which has been reissued on various compilations and repro 45s. Next (1958-59) came a stint with the Sage label, where he recorded as Whitey Pullen. Fine recordings again, which include "Tuscaloosa Lucy", "Let's All Go Wild" and "Moonshine" (aka "Moonshine Liquor"), but they didn't sell. Some of the Sage records were reissued in the seventies by Ronnie Weiser on his Rollin' Rock label. Pullen died of cancer at the age of only 30. His songs have been released on various artists compilations, but I don't know about a CD, just one LP on Revival records (Euro bootleg).
