He was offered a place on the St. Louis Cardinals roster but chose a career in music, appearing on the Louisiana Hayride and Red Foley's Ozark Jamboree. He moved back to his birthplace in the late '50's, joining Decca in 1957. His debut single, Is It Wrong (For Loving You), stayed in the country charts for nine months and also went to # 61 on the pop charts. After a spell at Kapp Records, he returned to Decca in 1964 and hit the Top 5 with Sittin' In An All Nite Café. Following a long spell out of action after a serious car crash, he went to number one with Bridge Washed Out, and over the next six years hit with the likes of Sittin' On A Rock and Talkin' To The Wall. All his 17 entries in the Billboard country charts (1957-1971) are on Decca. Mack also did some rock 'n' roll, like Rock-A-Chicka, which climbed to # 74 pop in early 1958.
