THE TURBANS - by Al Kelly The Turbans were led by Al Banks and got their first taste of a record with the Herald Label in January '56. They recorded "Sister Sooky" which I loved and bought a copy back then. Their next was "When You Dance", which became a bigger hit for the group. They went on to record 12 records for Herald from '55 to '57 A trivia question was the Turbans were the Quadrells on Whirlin' Disc in '57. The group members came and went but Al Banks stayed on as lead. After their long Herald stint, they had one release on the Philly Red Top label in '60 before signing with Roulette for a couple of releases. A remake of two old hits of theirs on Parkway caught some action locally but another contract with a major label, Imperial, didn't produce any hit records. Boy, they made all good records, not a dud in their releases but nothing caught on after their string of hits in '56-'57. They alway wore their turbans so everyone knew the group. They made a great presentation on stage with their act.
