Heavily influenced by the hispanic sound of Ritchie Valens, Lopez started his career on King Records where he recorded rockers very much in the Valens vein. He was taken to Reprise in the early '60s by producer Don Costa, who discovered him at PJ's Hollywood Club in Los Angeles. From 1963 to 1966 he had several big hits - If I Had A Hammer ('63), Kansas City ('63), Lemon Tree ('65) and I'm Comin' Home Cindy ('66) - not only in the US, but internationally. [If I Had A Hammer was # 1 in Holland - Dik] 14 LP's charted 1963-67, nine in the top 50. Good party music then. He hosted his own network television show and co-starred in the 1967 blockbuster, The Dirty Dozen.
