From Nutbush, Tennessee, Anna Mae Bullock met Ike in East St. Louis, where Ike's Kings of Rhythm were the city's top R&B act. Ike was already a seasoned performer who'd played a major role in the birth of rock 'n' roll. They became the hottest, most explosive band on the r&b circuit. Tina possessed a dynamic voice and a raunchy act as she cavorted across the stage whilst Ike howled away on guitar. Their first hit "A Fool in Love" went to # 2 on the R&B charts in the autumn of 1960 for Sue Records, followed by "I Idolize You," "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "Poor Fool," and "Tra La La La La". Over the next 15 years Ike and Tina Turner placed 25 records on the R&B charts for nine separate record companies. On the pop charts their biggest was a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" in 1971 (# 4). Following the break-up of the act and marriage in 1976, Tina went on to mega-stardom, especially in the mid-80s. Recommended listening: Ike & Tina Turner - Too Hot To Handle - Charly.
