Vocalist/guitarist/kazoo/composer. Although born in Georgia, he was brought up in Tampa, Florida, by his grandparents and it was there that he took up the guitar. Tampa eventually settled in Chicago, making his first recordings in 1928 and recording extensively until his retirement in 1953 - although he did resurface briefly in 1960. Responsible for blues classics such as "Crying Won't Help You", "It Hurts Me Too", "Don't You Lie To Me" and "Pretty Baby Blues" (a #7 Billboard R&B hit in 1951) and hokum standards like "It's Tight Like That" and "Let Me Play With Your Poodle" (#4 in 1942/43), his work influenced countless performers from the 1930s to the 1960s. He was inducted into the Blues Foundation's Hall Of Fame in 1981 shortly before his death. His Complete recorded works from 1928 to 1953 are available on 15 CDs from Document Records.
