Alaimo began his musical career as one of the first "blue eyed soul" recording artists, though he is probably best remembered by our US members for hosting the mid-sixties ABC TV network show "Where the Action Is", produced by Dick Clark. Steve Alaimo was studying at the University of Miami when he formed the Redcoats, who scored a local hit with "I Want You to Love Me." He signed to the Checker label as a solo act early in the '60s and released two unsuccessful albums, Twist With Steve Alaimo and Mashed Potatoes. Alaimo had grazed the Top 100 in March 1962 with the title track to the latter album, but gained his greatest chart success in early 1963, when the infectious "Everyday I Have to Cry" peaked at # 46. The song was later recorded by several other artists, including Dusty Springfield and Jerry Lee Lewis (on his first Elektra LP, adding a verse about all his spouses). He recorded seven more charting singles and several albums, but moved into production by the mid-'60s. One of Steve's early successes was recording and producing an Allman Brothers LP called 'Gregg and Duane'. (Steve and Gregg co-wrote the passionate "Melissa"). With his manager friend Henry Stone, Alaimo then founded a small independent record company called TK Records. At first with little success, but when TK moved from soul/R&B into disco, they scored several # 1 hits : "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrae (1974) and "Get Down Tonight" and "That's the Way I Like It", both by KC and the Sunshine Band (1975). In 1987, Steve Alaimo founded the Vision label with Ron and Howard Albert to record Stephen Stills, Jimmy Cliff, and Inner Circle, among others. He also appeared in several adventure films in the early '70s, including Wild Rebels (1971), Alligator Alley (1972), and Stanley (1972).
