The Stereos/Tams - by Al Kelly This record ("Memory Lane")is a real true blue Philly record. This record hung around for four years lingering on limited air play, it was played weekly on the Blavat , Harvey Holiday, Hy Lit and others who featued oldies. It was first released by thr Stereos on Bud Brees (WPEN DJ) and Jack Faith's (musician and brother of Russ) Mink label in '59. After about a month, theu realized there was another group with that name and changed it to the Tams. They kept this name even though they had no relation with the Atlanta Tams. I believe Reggie Harrison was the lead. Now those who don't know about this record, it's hard to explain but every record hop, this was always one of the top requested tunes to the dancers. Then after several DJs started really playing it, Cameo/Parkway picked the record up and released on their Parkway label as the Hippies in '63. It became a #1 record in Philly. I used to run five record hops a weekend and the kids would request to play it again while it was playing. Some Philly expert told me they sold 200,000 copies of the record. This record is still heard on the oldies shows, yes, Philly still has oldies radio playing every day. A real legend in Philly "Memory Lane"!!!
