A cult hero, Slim Gaillard was a frequently hilarious personality whose comedy (inventing his own jive language with a liberal use of the words "vout" and "oreenee") generally overshadowed his music. Gaillard formed a duo with bassist Leroy "Slam" Stewart in 1937. As Slim and Slam they had several hits in 1938-39, the biggest being "Flat Foot Floogie", a huge novelty hit on Vocalion, covered by Fats Waller, The Mills Bothers and many others. After two years on the West Coast, he moved to NYC in 1947, where he formed the Slim Gaillard Trio with Bam Brown and Zutty Singleton. He scored a # 5 R&B hit in late 1946 with "Cement Mixer (Put-Ti, Put-Ti)", co-written with Lee Ricks. His daughter was married to Marvin Gaye. He lived in the UK for years, an amusing raconteur on UK TV ' 80s. "Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere" was recorded in London ' 82 with Buddy Tate and Jay McShann. Compilations: "Slim And Slam : Complete Recordings 1938-42" (UK Charly, 3 CD-set), "Groove Juice Special ' 96" (Sony Legacy). The cheapo CD "Slim and Slam, 1938-39" on Giants of Jazz (filed under Jazz!) shouldn't be too hard to find. Website: http://www.pocreations.com/slim.html
