From: "Dik de Heer" Date: Fri Jul 12, 2002 1:13 am Subject: Born To Be With You : Sam "The Man" Taylor SAM "THE MAN" TAYLOR (By Shaun Mather) Born 12 July 1916, Lexington, Tennessee Died 5 October 1990, Westchester Town, New York Along with the likes of King Curtis and Lee Allen, Sam "The Man" Taylor was one of the top r'n'b/r'n'r sax players of the 40s and 50s. Many a 2 minute wonder was enhanced halfway through with one of his honking solos. He began his career in the 30s with Scatman Crothers and the Sunset Royal Orchestra. By the beginning of the following decade he was working with Cootie Williams and Lucky Millinder before joining Cab Callaway with whom he spent the six years. During the 50s he was one of the premier session musicians, working with Ray Charles, Big Joe Turner, Nappy Brown, Ella Fitzgerald and countless others. Throughout his career he had albums of his own work issued, but it was really as a session player that his ensured his place in the history books. His only solo CD currently in print is "Swingsation" on Polygram. 14 MGM tracks from 1955-56.
