The huge success of Tab Hunter's "Young Love" encouraged other labels to sign popular young actors to recording contracts. Liberty signed Robert Wagner, Capitol went after Robert Mitchum and Columbia's Epic subsidiary got lucky with Sal Mineo, whose "Start Movin' (In My Direction)" made # 9 on the Billboard charts in May 1957. Three other top 50 hits followed in 1957-58. Mineo's film credits include "Rebel Without A Cause", "Rock Pretty Baby" and "Exodus". He continued making films during the 1960s and also returned to stage work, having debuted on Broadway at the age of twelve. He directed and starred in "Fortune And Men's Eyes", a play which reflected Mineo's own homosexuality. He was returning home from the theatre when he was stabbed to death in a Hollywood street in 1976. Website: http://www.salmineo.com Book: H. Paul Jeffers, Sal Mineo : his life, murder and mystery.
