Sugaree in 1959. Raised in rural Kentucky he messed around in various bands, mainly bluegrass, before heading to Cincinnati where he soon ventured into the King studios to record. After a couple of singles in a more rocking vein he tried his luck with a cover of the Marty Robbins number Sugaree, coupled with Red Rooster. The record came out on the Note label of Columbus, but the master was quickly picked up by the prominent Chess record label of Chicago. He was soon promoting the single on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and playing venues like the Hollywood Bowl with the Everly Brothers and the Coasters. Follow-up singles proved unsuccessful and he drifted back to bluegrass and country music, as well as developing his own studio and record label, Jewel which allowed him to issue singles by Claude Ely and Jimmie Logsdon. In 1971, he retired from active performing, although he did record an album with Lonnie Mack two years later.
