Although he never had a chart hit, Prysock's work is held in high regard among sax aficionados. Not only could he honk and scream with the best of the classic honkers, his feeling and technique were unparalleled. From 1945 till 1953 he played in the bands of Buddy Johnson, Tiny Grimes and Tiny Bradshaw . Between 1954 and 1961, Prysock recorded prolifically for Mercury : twenty singles and five LP's. He joined many Alan Freed revues in the Fifties. After 1957, the demand for Red's booting style was diminishing fast. Upon leaving Mercury, he signed with King, where he had four 45s released in 1962-63. During the seventies and eighties he teamed up with his brother, Arthur "Red" Prysock (1929-1997), a jazz and blues singer. After suffering a series of heart attacks, he died in 1993. Twenty-four of his Mercury recordings are collected on the CD "The Best Of Red Prysock" (AVI 5012), released in 1996.
